The Bavarian Governor Edmund Stoiber sponsored the foundation of the Bavaria California Technology Center in the summer of 2000 as a joint institution of all Bavarian universities (Mission of BaCaTeC). BaCaTeC is also sponsored by the Bavarian "High-Tech-Offensive Zukunft Bayern".

Complementing the Bavaria-America Center in Munich, the Bavaria California Technology Center is active in the high tech areas of life sciences, information and communication technologies, new materials, environmental technologies and mechatronics (Mission).

BaCaTeC is a central institution of the Bavarian universities and has its headquarters at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg.
